A DEEP DIVE INTO UNI HARVESTING NEAR AND FAR

ocals and sea urchins alike settle down in Santa Barbara for the unmatched weather, glistening ocean, and impeccable dining options. Our go-to dinner is pasta at Tre Lune or paella at Loquita, theirs is kelp. The Santa Barbara Channel’s warm water is an ideal environment for kelp growth, which is sea urchin’s favorite food.

Sea urchin epitomizes a hard exterior shielding a delectably soft interior. Breaking through its spiky shell reveals a culinary treasure—uni, the urchin's gonads and a delicacy most often featured on the sashimi menu of your favorite sushi spot. Santa Barbara’s proximity to some of the world's finest uni sources renders it an alluring ingredient for chefs and diners alike. The best part? Ecologists want us to eat uni! It’s actually beneficial for the environment. With warming water temperatures, a sea star disease eliminated the crucial predator of purple urchin leading to a population explosion. These echinoderms have been eating away at the kelp which is an unsung ocean hero as it creates shelter for

sea life, absorbs carbon dioxide, and protects the shoreline. So, this is a guilt free animal indulgence. Not all uni is created equal. California uni is categorized into three grades determined by factors such as texture, color, freshness, and taste. A California Gold-rated uni boasts a firm, buttery texture, a vibrant goldish-orange-yellow hue, a fresh, salty ocean scent, and maintains a sweet, crisp taste. Progressing to the next tier, Premium California uni retains the firm, buttery texture and sea scent but may exhibit a slightly less vibrant color. The last rank is California Select, characterized by a more brownish color, a nuttier taste, and a softer texture. For a deeper look into the culinary capacity of uni, I engaged in some field work, and by field work I mean exploring Santa Barbara’s restaurant scene on the hunt for echinoderm entrees. While research needs to be replicated (which I recommend you do), these are my published findings.

FINCH & FORK The pasta is simple: spaghetti coated with creamy parmigiano Reggiano sprinkled with furikake and bottarga served in a Holly Thompson custom made ceramic bowl inspired by what uni divers see when they resurface—the Channel Islands and the coastline. A dark steel blue glaze organically meets its cream counterpart in the middle of the piece like the shore meets the land. The main attraction sits in all its bright yellow orange beauty atop the dish.

Executive Chef Nathan Lingle is no stranger to the purple urchin he serves tonight. A Maine native, his childhood was marked by collecting the sea hedgehogs for fun, not for food. After studying in Japan, he was made aware of a sea urchin’s full potential. Now an urchin diver himself and chef, he’s on a mission to combine his interests. This cacio e pepe-esque dish topped with buttery uni is a fruit of his labor. The bottarga works as a salt substitute while the furikake imitates the flavors of cracked pepper. The sea urchin is the icing on the cake providing a subtle sweetness and melt-in-mouth sensation. It’s a beautiful introduction to uni for first timers, but it is not around forever. The delicacy-based dish holds its place on Finch & Fork’s menu through March.

As each course surpasses the last, anticipation builds for the sea urchin finale. Chef Vaea approaches an ice chest, and a cool mist rises. Through the fog, the unmistakable golden orange hue of uni emerges. Grade A uni, perfectly intact, is meticulously arranged in a wooden encasement. This course is a captivating two-man show. With a sous chef holding seaweed paper already loaded with a bed of rice, Vaea artfully applies a brushstroke of ponzu, places the uni delicately on top, and finishes with a dusting of matcha salt, a squeeze of lemon, and a pinch of freshly grated wasabi. It’s a one-bite wonder. Breaking through the firm outer layer reveals a burst of sweet, briny flavor and refreshing coolness. The seaweed paper adds a delightful crunch.

SUSHI BY SCRATCH RESTAURANTS OMAKASE

The final round of Sushi by Scratch Restaurants’ 17 course omakase experience is a knockout, and it’s uni, but I am getting ahead of myself. The chalk-written menu on the wall serves as a program for the culinary performance about to unfold. With only ten fortunate guests at each seating, every spot feels like front row center. Our featured artists for the evening are Chef Sean Vaea and his skilled sous chefs, Rian Konishi and Ryan Mayo. Armed with white rice as their canvas and an array of fresh seafood, housemade soy, and grated wasabi root as their mediums, they turn the intimate Montecito sushi bar into a breathtaking spectacle, a true representation of culinary artistry.

Delivered from Japan that very day, the freshness is palpable. “Orders have to be in by 4 a.m. to arrive the next day,” Vaea shares. Though this particular uni does not call the California coast its home, a Santa Barbara uni course is in the works. The Japanese actually prefer the California species, and I can’t blame them. Though both incredibly delicious, Japanese uni and California uni have their differences. Santa Barbara urchin is often regarded as the creamier and sweeter of the two, whereas the Hokkaieo uni carries a stronger ocean brine flavor. Either way, you can’t go wrong. On the four to five menus Sushi by Scratch Kitchen curates a year, you’ll find uni on every single one and there is a reason why.

BARBAREÑO You’ll likely find a caesar salad on the menu of any restaurant you go to. It’s tried and true. Barbareño is no exception. Yet, you won’t find any anchovy and your dressing may have a slight orange tint. The culprit of the color? Uni, of course. “We wanted to make a caesar that was a little more Santa Barbara,” Chef Preston Knox says of the anchovy substitute. With the widely considered best sea urchin in the world in their own front yard and a red oak grill ready to work, the Uni Caesar earned its spot on Barbareño’s “To Share” menu. Grilled romaine, coated generously with a traditional dressing blend of garlic, lemon, egg yolk, mustard, cona de cabre, and its not-so traditional uni addition. For an extra crunch, the dish is sprinkled with cracked black

pepper and sourdough croutons. Finished with a dusting of cona de cabre to garnish, this caesar is something to write home about. While still capturing the necessary creaminess of the classic salad, the dressing is much lighter than its counterparts. The sea urchin offers the ideal salt taste whereas its anchovy predecessor sometimes seems to overcompensate. Balancing the subtle kick of the pepper and smokiness of the romaine, the mustard plays a larger than normal role. It’s a well-received enhancement. Though I have been focusing on the green’s divergence from the norm, on all fronts necessary, the classic caesar you know and love still remains. If it isn’t broken, don’t fix it, but why not upgrade it? Barbareño’s Uni Caesar is my case in point.*

B

efore Scott Walker met Erin Gomez, his standard fare was whatever was easiest and breakfast burritos. An environmental filmmaker, Walker spent 10 years educating himself and others on how to take care of the earth and our oceans. “I realized in the midst of that journey that I was a hypocrite, because I wasn’t taking care of my internal environment.” In comes Erin, “She was the embodiment of that,” Scott gushes. Erin’s awe at her college roommate’s father reversing type II diabetes through raw foods and juicing marked the genesis of her juicing venture. Erin’s passion for wellness became the missing piece in Scott’s life, and as they embarked on their journey together, juicing seamlessly integrated into their daily routine.

“Erin’s Retreat" emerged as a healing sanctuary for friends navigating breakups or recovering from rough nights. For three days, “guests” would reset with Erin’s juicing and cooking. “She was opening the door for people to live a clean lifestyle and for people to feel what it’s like when you’re thriving, purifying yourself.” The difference between when they came and when they left was night and day. Their first thought? “We have to share this.” Walker built a garden and Erin juiced what grew. There was simply nothing in Santa Barbara like it. Outgrowing their backyard, they set up shop on Parker Way. Juice Ranch is literally the fruit of their labor. Influenced by Wesson A. Price and Max Gerson, the polarity of their methods is embedded in the brand name. Juice, an homage to Gerson’s juicing and diet research, and Ranch, a reflection of Price’s method of a diet high in nutritional density and connecting food back to the land. A blend of these ideas, Juice Ranch creates elixirs that don’t shy away from either. Gomez is a strong believer in the marriage of health and taste. “I always wanted healthy food to taste as good as not-so-healthy food.” Whether the recipe comes to her in a dream or is inspired by a dish she had one night, Erin thrives at balancing flavors. “I help out with my taste buds,” Walker humorously adds. With only four restaurants in Santa Barbara that are 100% organic, fresh produce from the local farmer’s market and cooking it yourself is the key. Seed oil is the secret enemy in dining out. “People don’t realize that it is everywhere and super inflammatory.” Cleansing is Juice Ranch’s forte. Walker recommends that entering the colder months, their Caveman Cleanse is the way to go. Bone broth and dark leafy greens give the routine a little more sustenance. “A lot of issues that

we have come from eating in a GMO food environment. estled within Victoria Court is a place that must be experienced; language falls short when it comes to capturing dynamic forces, like feelings, or for lack of a better word, magic. But I will do my best...Upon entering PALMA Colectiva an instant air of calm washes over me, like the spiritual embodiment of an oversized rain stick used for sound healing. Sunrays pour in through tall windows, illuminating the pops of earthy sage intentionally adorning the minimalistic space. The recent addition to Santa Barbara is the brain—and soul—child of husband and wife duo Daniel Pozas and Meredith Markworth-Pollack. Inspired by their day-to-day mindfulness practices and ancestral traditions, the seed of an idea that emerged during the pause of the pandemic has blossomed into a collective for healing arts, wellness events, retreats, conscious retail, and education.

Finding my spot within PALMA’s oasis, I sit crosslegged next to my childhood friend atop a shearling rug and mat. Naturally, I recognize the facilitators, Danielle and Giuliana, and run up to hug them before we begin the Reiki and Sound session. I pick a tarot card and set an intention for the journey to come. My aim is to work through some family dynamics: releasing the past with empathy and reconnecting with an open heart. Danielle plays sound bowls and sings, while Giuliana performs individual Reiki—energy work that clears blocks and promotes healing. The powerful combination transports me to a seemingly parallel dimension, where I meet with a young version of myself. As the stagnant energy moves through my body, I let go of old beliefs and binds that no longer serve me, and as the invisible grip around my heart loosens, tears stream down my cheeks. I am whole, I am safe. The words reverberate through me in resonance with the sound that blankets the space with loving protection, like a mother does. I leave with a sense of inner peace and the type of clarity that comes from a breakthrough-rich therapy session. The Full Harvest Moon lights up the evening sky as I return to PALMA, this time with my mother, for a Cacao and Shamanic Sound Journey. Micah, a vibrational artist and healer, leads the ceremony, which begins with smudging—a form of energy clearing done with smoke and a feather tool to cleanse each attendant’s field—before diving into the power of cacao. Regarded as a master plant teacher, the

“medicine” is a heart opener: a doorway to healing and remembering our natural place in the world and cosmos. We take turns sharing intentions with the group; themes of surrender, grounding, and opening to love echo amongst strangers who somehow feel safe and supportive as we sip on viscose cacao. I rest my head on a moonshaped pillow and close my eyes. Drums, rattles, bowls, the aforementioned rain stick, and song lull me into an altered state. The concoction moves through me, and its essence is palpable. Akin to the effects of a microdose (note: none of the offerings involve actual hallucinogens), I feel the veil between myself and the spiritual world— where frequency is language—melt away. Visions of beautiful realities and perhaps the future run through my mind like a play; unlike the other journey, this one feels light, inspiring, and reaffirms the path I am on. Aside from group classes open to the community, PALMA hosts private events, one-on-one healing sessions, offsite retreats, and a special PALMA Ritual ideal for a self-care day of pampering. It's one of those dreamy early-fall afternoons; the temperature still feels like summer, yet golden leaves sprinkled by the breeze crunch below my feet. I bring my mother, a friend who just moved back to town, and another celebrating her birthday along for a girl’s day treat. We each get smudged with sage and palo santo and pull tarot cards. The Ritual involves 20-minute intervals sampling four treatments: massage, Reiki, a facial, and red light therapy combined with an amethyst Biomat for increased detoxification. We change into comfy linen robes and split into pairs. My massage is one of the most intuitive I’ve had, and even with the short time, my intense knot is near-release. The practitioners swap spots, and I enjoy a healing Reiki session to Meredith’s calming sound bath. The strike of the gong signifies it is time to make our way to the second floor. In a daze, I lay down for my all-natural facial, which includes a buccal massage to promote lymphatic drainage and plump the skin. I'm shocked that even a mini-treatment leaves my face aglow. For my final round, I enjoy a red light therapy treatment to help soothe and restore skin while laying

atop an amethyst Biomat that supports pain relief and relaxation through a combination of negative ions, light, and crystals. The warm mat puts me in a meditative state, somewhere between cloud nine and sleep. I hear the gong for the fourth time: the Ritual is complete. We reconvene downstairs for hot herbal tea, each completely renewed after what felt like a spa session for the body and soul. My final PALMA experience is Restorative Yoga and Sound set to candlelight. SB local Achok leads the gentle practice, offering variations for each pose. Meredith takes the group through sound healing, which, along with an invitation to breathe deep into the moment, enhances both the stretching and spiritual practice. Breathing into the discomfort of particular moves reminds me of our power to transmute anything, as dormant energy— frozen in time along with unprocessed emotions— begins to flow with the release of my spine in Supta Matsyendrasana. Classes like this always impart simple yet profound lessons: 1. Less is more; you don't have to push yourself to the brink or break a sweat to get results. 2. Give yourself grace and space to expand—to feel everything (both physical, emotional, and spiritual). The group lazily rises from Savasana, giving a collective bow of gratitude for all in the space. Achok brought delicious homemade samosas to share with the group, and I gladly oblige. Made with love and bathed in soothing sound, they’re a hug for my belly. I ask Meredith what her vision is for PALMA, ’’to inspire and bring forth deep wellness,’’ she says, eyes sparking from the evening. Mission accomplished. The consciously curated haven feels like a manifestation of exactly what the collective needs. Within its walls, everyone is welcome, from esoteric enthusiasts to those just dipping their toes into alternative modalities, plant medicine, and the art of ceremony. The entrance’s pair of matte-black French doors, framed by glowing angular sconces, invite a sleek Restoration Hardware sophistication, while a set of olive trees in sandstroked terracotta vases below evoke a Mediterranean muse. The space imparts a certain warmth exclusive to an upscale resort spa: recessed archways with floating, low-lit shelves display an array of select serums, and each treatment nook is intimately sealed by a sumptuous, dark chocolate door. In each corner, leather-leaved rubber trees act as natural humidifiers by absorbing airborne toxins—yes, even Taylor’s decorative finishes are skin-centric.

The Arlington oasis is a physical testament to the sixyear-old clinic’s recent metamorphosis, and Taylor’s team of aestheticians have the accolades to show for it. As recent graduates of the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the trio—Taylor, Kaylee, and Ari—have doubled down

As I walk through the doors of Megan’s Organic Market, I’m greeted by the warmth and coziness that can only be equated to that of a mother’s hug. A friendly budtender checks me in, and I grab a basket to begin my shopping. The funky aesthetic invites me to explore the shelves lined with high-quality cannabis products. I feel at ease here, like I’m indulging in a routine trip to the local supermarket. The concept of Megan’s Organic Market was born in 2010 when Megan Souza took note of an underserved consumer segment in the cannabis market. She believed that she could cater to women, parents, and senior demographics if given the correct opportunity. Thus, she dreamt up the brand identity for a wholesome, inviting cannabis sales operation. Beginning humbly at Souza’s husband’s farm in Cayucos, CA, the women-owned cannabis company has bloomed into five storefronts over the past 13 years. Prior to Proposition 64’s passing, Megan’s Organic Market operated solely as a medical cannabis delivery service. Souza recalls the 100% female delivery staff donning aprons and picnic baskets stocked with product samples in cute jars with handmade labels. “We were able to differentiate ourselves by focusing on approachability,” says Souza. In 2020, Megan’s Organic Market’s first flagship store opened its doors to serve San Luis Obispo County and has since created a community amongst its clientele. “Offering an experience that’s more wholesome with a wide variety of wellness-focused products made us stand out to consumers,” says Souza. Friday nights at the store often feel like a social gathering, with regular customers chatting about their lives and recommending products to one another.

Souza takes pride in the fresh perspective Megan’s Organic Market provides to an often underserved consumer segment—women. From CBD “cramp stamps'' to vaginal suppositories designed to help with menopause symptoms, the women-owned business has brought a unique angle to the male dominated industry. This approach impacts how the communities they serve receive the company and cannabis in general. “My goal is to normalize the cannabis buying experience, says Souza.” Today, Megan’s Organic Market has grown into Souza’s objective by destigmatizing outdated stereotypes. Every product grown and sold by the storefront is lab tested and verified to not contain any residual pesticides, herbicides, or fungicides to ensure the health and safety of consumers. In the spirit of Megan’s Organic Market’s mission to “redefine society’s relationship with cannabis through responsible stewardship,” the company culture shines community involvement at its forefront. “We make sure that we are out there meeting our neighbors and cleaning up the communities we operate in,” says Souza. The company seeks to instill this level of involvement in the Santa Barbara County community, where the newest storefront recently landed in December. Joining the Santa Barbara South Coast Chamber of Commerce, trying to help restart the UCSB Canna-Club, and hosting educational events are only a few tasks on Souza’s list to fully integrate Megan’s Organic Market into the community. ave you ever wondered what people think about you when you walk into a room? While everyone typically says that confidence is what leaves a lasting impression, the colors we wear might actually tell a different story.

Color psychology, or simply the way that the human mind and body react to color, has likely woven itself into more aspects of your life than you’re even aware of. Not only do the colors we wear have a psychological impact, so do the colors in our home, in our favorite brands, and even in our wellness treatments. In order to understand how crucial this concept is to our overall health, I had the pleasure of speaking with three color experts, each in a different field.

Barclay Butera, renowned interior designer for over 30 years, elaborated a bit about how necessary it is to find a color palette that is not only appealing to the eye, but soothing for all the senses. Keeping it classic, Barcaly says that “Simply White” by Benjamin Moore is his go-to color—very, very soft and not obtrusive. Blue is a color that calms you down, adding this hue behind white can help it feel less stark and more inviting. Just like in a spa, when designing a space in your home that’s meant to be a safe haven from the outside, adding pale neutrals or natural colors can help your body calm down and reset. Now, of course, everything depends on the type of space you are designing, and taking risks with your color choice can be just what a room needs. He explained it to me like this—for a cigar room, where the energy is darker and moody, tobacco red with a splash of brown is perfect. For an office or area meant to focus, a pale blue or pink—too strong of a color here can actually disrupt thinking. Overall, Barclay recommends throwing at least three different swatches of a similar color on the wall and living with them to see how your body and mind react to each individual color and tone. Michelle Lewis is also a fan of experimenting with color to find what speaks to you. As a color psychology expert and strategist herself, she gave me insights into how color impacts our personal development, both mentally and physically. Michelle highlights that “color is participatory—it facilitates, supports, and communicates.” There are eight primary colors of communication: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, and magenta, and we need each of these colors to a certain degree. Our need and our craving for each color matures and develops over time just like we do. Similar to Barclay, Michelle is versed in interior design and spoke about how critical it is to understand the intentions of your room before deciding the color. For a relaxed and calming environment, she too recommends colors such


as blues, oranges and greens, and for a space that craves energy, reds, yellows and magentas. As someone with a strong and assertive personality, she chose to make her bathroom blue in order to bring down her heart rate and blood pressure. In contrast, for her office, she chose a stabilizing green—bringing her up if she's down, and down if she's too up. These concepts also translate into clothing and the types of colors we should try and incorporate into our wardrobes. Michelle typically wears deep teal, paired with gray. The teal is meant to combine both the feelings of blue and green, creating a pleasant aura to be around. Now, the gray is also intentional, a “whitespace” color as she refers to it. Colors such as white, gray, black, and brown, should be used to help the desired pop of color stand out even more. Standout colors are not only useful in our wardrobes, but also in our medicine! Working with a holistic practitioner, Michelle learned how certain plants can absorb frequencies from the light spectrum that help support different parts of the body. For example, red light can penetrate into our tissues, helping to accelerate healing and promote good circulation. In her final remarks, Michelle emphasizes that “color is one of the more supportive tools we can use for our daily communication.” Color fosters our communication in a multitude of ways, from projecting both how we feel and how we want others to feel around us. Local personal stylist Elissa Williams takes a holistic approach to finding her clients' signature styles, teaching them how to make their staple colors tell the story they want the world to read. Elissa’s approach to personal styling is hands-on, she

believes in the importance of finding out what makes her clients special—how they want their pieces to feel, how they want to show up, what colors make them do a little happy dance, and what colors are indicative of their current phase in life. She notes how important it is to take an in depth approach to understanding the whole person because color and clothing can change the way that someone perceives themselves. It can also help you build trust with others because they can see that who you are on the inside matches who you are on the outside. Elissa emphasized that it’s important to dress how you want to feel—if you are in a bad mood, wear something bright, like magenta, to invigorate and make you feel alive. Even winter whites instead of browns or blacks can make all the difference in both how warm you come across and how warm you feel. We are all visual beings, so it is also critical to understand that people like a little visual contrast—try to find an alternative to black. While orange might not be your new black, Elissa notes that really only about 30% of the population should be wearing black as their staple color. For the majority of people, she recommends swapping it out for a deep plum or navy blue to draw a bit more attention and liven up your look. As our experts have helped me understand, the colors we choose have a profound influence on our well-being, perceptions and interactions. From the serene palettes that transform our homes into sanctuaries to the vibrant hues that adorn our wardrobes, each shade tells a story. So, next time you step into a room I hope you’ll know exactly what people are thinking—rock your cool, calm and collected blue or blow their minds in a bold magenta, just let the color speak for you!*

As a vintage fashion stylist and designer based in Santa Barbara, she operates out of her downtown studio. The Story, where clients are welcomed for one-on-one styling appointments. There, they peruse her vast collection of meticulously curated vintage clothing and accessories. Nina’s unapologetic punchy and avant-garde fashion sense mirrors her vibrant celebration of individuality. Daring her clients to embrace their distinct personalities and make a statement with every ensemble, no matter the occasion. Everyone has a story to tell and Nina Q weaves fashion narratives.

On a Friday afternoon at El Hogar, the Lutah Riggs home of friend and client Lily Hahn, Nina Q’s first capsule collection came to life. A blend of men’s and women's timeless fashion crafted entirely from vintage pieces is the definition of fluidity and thus inspires collaboration. A collaboration that began with Olena Sablina, a seamstress and designer, who, as a refugee from Ukraine was the foundation for building on “The Story” and testament to the inclusive spirit of fashion, transcending boundaries and celebrating diversity. Santa Barbara notable fashion figures, including Lily Hahn herself, Achok Majak, Grant Nestor of Hammies, and stylist Alice Brophy were all on hand that afternoon to bring their unique perspectives to the styling of something beyond the typical dress code of the season. There are times when you need a day off, and then there are times when you need a hard reset. When I checked in to Kamalaya, a holistic wellness sanctuary and spa on Koh Samui in Thailand, I was depleted. I needed a revival—not just a band aid—and I heard this was just the place.

Balance and Revitalise package, which includes carefully selected daily treatments and a cocktail of bespoke supplements. All the programs are rooted in Eastern medicine and Ayurveda, ensuring a holistic and natural approach. Leila advises me that Kamalaya “doesn’t always give you what you came for; it gives you what you need.”

Arranged on a jungly hillside overlooking the South China Sea, Kamalaya is centered around a cave once occupied by Buddhist monks—which is undoubtedly where the indescribable peaceful energy felt throughout the property is rooted. Warm island air comforts me like a weighted blanket as I head to my room. I unpack my bikinis, and thoughts, feeling hopeful about the week ahead. Then, I surrender to jet lag from the 24 hour flight.

Keeping her words in mind, I head to breakfast at Soma. It’s rare to see a room of people sitting alone without a phone glued to their hand. I remind myself that 75% of guests come solo, to reset and heal. Plus, Kamalaya heavily encourages a digital detox, with signs on each table subtly implying to stay the F off your phone... My favorite reads: “A digital detox is liberating for the soul. ‘All addictions, including socially acceptable ones, can be a distraction to avoid being with ourselves.’” I immediately drop my iPhone into my tote as if it’s boiling hot.

In the morning, a nurse takes my vitals and biometrics before introducing me to my assigned naturopath, Leila, to review my itinerary for the next seven days. Kamalaya offers over 20 thoughtfully curated programs to strengthen guests’ wellbeing throughout their stay, and beyond. The plans cater to everything from optimal fitness and ideal weight to sleep enhancement and emotional harmony. There’s even a new women’s health-centered program called Radiant Bliss, which addresses specific needs for balancing hormones, fertility, pregnancy, and menopause. I booked the Comprehensive

The detox doesn’t stop at electronic devices. The menu is the purest I’ve seen in all my travels. It’s split into two sections: detox and regular. Both exhibit the lively, flavorful essence of Thai cuisine with nutritious ingredients. The regular menu is still exceptionally healthy, in line with a detox menu at a mainstream resort. Think poached snapper in soy sauce and chicken stirfry. On the detox menu, they do the thinking for you, ensuring every dish is free of wheat, dairy, meat, fish,

gluten, sugar, nuts, potato, tomatoes, bell peppers (you know, the primary cause of obesity), corn, soy, egg, and eggplant. Yes, there’s carrot soup at breakfast, but also hearty pancakes, muesli, fruit jams, and dense rosemary bread. Since I’m here, l go all in and follow the detox menu, while adding protein. I feel satisfied after each meal, gravitating to vegetable curries, steamed fish, spring rolls, and mung bean pasta. It’s not one bit institutional. The dishes are exciting, fresh, and nourishing, and they inspire me to be more creative with my own cooking. Not once do I feel deprived. Sitting at breakfast, I eat muesli topped with a dollop of coconut yogurt and passion fruit. I’m as invested in the squirrel traversing the treetops as I would usually be in the perfect response to a stressful email. I’m fully present, enjoying the leafy view and symphony of birds. I chew thoroughly and pay attention to my satiation, for the first time in a long time. To start my wellness journey, I meet with a functional medicine doctor who recommends I up my iodine, zinc, and selenium intake for optimal thyroid function. During a naturopathic lifestyle consultation,

Leila gives me sustainable and easily implementable tips, like beginning each meal with fiber and protein, and reducing snacking to allow the digestive system to rest. I get reiki, Bioresonance therapy, and acupuncture. When I question what sensitivity in the different pressure points means, my acupuncturist, Beam, replies with a smile, “It means I’m going to fix your body.” At dinner time, I return to Soma and boldly take the first seat at the communal table. After ten minutes of feeling like I’m back in middle school, as people walk past to individual tables, a few guests join me. All 12 seats are occupied within an hour, filling the room with laughter. Many are repeat guests, raving about how Kamalaya kickstarted a new way of life for them. Others are extending their stays for an additional week. Everyone is kind, and no two people are from the same country, offering a wealth of viewpoints and riveting conversation topics. We connect over the treatments we’ve had and ones we’re looking forward to or curious about. Here, no one is condemned for “ordering the salad.” Each guest is on a different path, with a common objective of bettering their lives.

We laugh the night away, not a phone or drop of alcohol in sight—now that’s a community I want to be a part of. I return to the communal table each evening, eager to hear about my new friends’ days. Throughout the week, I have a few daily appointments at the Wellness Sanctuary. I reach peak relaxation during the 90-minute traditional Asian foot massage. Let’s be honest—does anything sound better than an hour-anda-half foot massage? The following thirty-minute Taoist abdominal massage feels like the masseuse is knitting my organs, yet after, they’re functioning more efficiently than ever. In meditation, the practitioner reminds me to embrace hardships as they have motivated me to achieve what I have now, “When you give forgiveness, good things flow toward you.” For Shidohara, I lay on a table, a copper vessel hanging above my head. A steady stream of warm oil covers my forehead for the next half hour, saturating my mind with peaceful, healing thoughts. Afterward, I soak in the steam room, making it out in time to watch the butterscotch sunset while alternating between hot and cold pools. I feel pampered and recharged. Each flawlessly executed treatment is relaxing yet productive (my favorite combination), and many are age-old Asian and Ayurvedic treatments—which Kamalaya has been offering for years—that are slowly making their way into mainstream spas. As the week progresses, my thinking becomes sharper. Feelings of purpose, calm, and self-improvement wash over me. Healthy decisions become innate...not that an unhealthy choice is available at Kamalaya. Every morning a cacophony of insects wakes me with the rising sun, which I watch from my porch like a ritual. I start each breakfast with four wellness shots—two green, healthytasting elixirs, two palatable. After each meal, I dutifully take my prescribed vitamins. The shift in habits is subtle, but the impact is profound. I go into my Stress Management consultation expecting a sermon on creating work-life balance. Thirty minutes later, tears stream down my cheeks as former monk Srinivas Bhat guides me through the most enlightening meditation, during which I communicate with and comfort my childhood self. At Kamalaya, they go deep, deep, deep. I speak openly and feel validated and understood for the first time. Once I dry my tears, I ask Srinivas if everyone cries during his sessions. He sheepishly smiles, “Maybe.” He reminds me that life is a frequency game, “Recall the ways the universe caught you when you needed it.

It’s no coincidence. Love doesn’t have to be a struggle. You can work hard, but it’s not a struggle. The pursuit of endless virtue is a vice. Embrace every part of your story as it got you to where you are now.” I leave feeling... different...lighter. I retreat to the Arjan Cave at the heart of the property to continue my meditation and journal. A couple of decades ago, Kamalaya’s owner, John Stewart, found the cave and immediately called his wife Karina to halt construction on the property they were building in Nepal, as this was the place. I leave my sandals at the entrance and duck inside. I make my way to the end of the cave, to a shrine adorned with marigolds, ship replicas, and candles. Sitting cross-legged as my incense burns, I journal about my newfound perspective in the dimly-lit serene space. When not in treatments, I swim in the dreamy pool lined by lily ponds and meander along the private beach, watching egrets tip-toe in the shallows, as relaxed as the guests. I work out at the three-story gym, noting the lap pool and reformer pilates studio for my next visit. While my program is geared towards unwinding, Kamalaya offers numerous daily classes and excursions, and more medical treatments, such as hyperbaric, vitamin IVs, ozone therapy, and colonics, for those looking to take things up a notch. I recall Leila’s words: Kamalaya gives you what you need, not necessarily what you came for. I showed up hoping to chill out and leave less bloated. I got that, and then some. I typically depart vacations feeling sluggish, yet I feel lighter—mentally and physically. I got the revitalization you want from a vacation without the overindulgence. I’m certain that spending a month at Kamalaya would sort out all of my problems. With forgiveness in my heart, I leave at peace with the trauma, abuse, and hardships I’ve faced. It’s shocking how clear-headed, energetic, and euphoric I feel. Though I have a healthy lifestyle, the contrast is eye-opening. We live in a region known for its emphasis on wellness, yet Kamalaya has an energy and staff that surpass anything I’ve experienced in California. Each practitioner is handpicked from around the world for their expertise, empathetic demeanor, and genuine desire to help others. How good I feel is a testament to their care and Kamalaya’s thoughtful programs. It’s not your basic wellness retreat with yoga and green juice. The atmosphere makes me want to be a better person and improve my body and life, yet simultaneously I’m content and relaxed to simply be—a feeling I could get used to.*

n Hawaiian culture, a double rainbow is a symbol of good things to come. On our flight to the island of Kauai, I eagerly anticipate the magical sight of a double rainbow, something I’ve never witnessed before. I look forward to sharing this experience with my twoyear-old daughter, niece, and sister. Spoiler alert: During our stay at 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, we see a double rainbow not once, but twice.

As we cruise along Kuhio Highway, which nearly circles the island, the world seems to take on a verdant hue, as if I view it through green-tinted glasses. I find the varying shades of green captivating, from the bright hues of kiwi to the rich tones of emerald and jade. Kauai is less developed and less densely populated than Oahu and Maui, boasting a pristine environment. The island's center is often cited as one of the wettest places on Earth, contributing to its lush landscapes. Perched on the cliffs with the vast ocean as its backdrop, Kauai's north shore complements the ethos of 1 Hotel. Moving away from the marble elegance of its predecessor, the St. Regis, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay warmly embraces

wood and other natural elements. The entrance, adorned with fire features and waterfalls, sets the tone for what's inside. Across the expansive open lobby is a two-story wall of glass that frames a breathtaking view of the island’s Mount Makana, and jewel-toned water. This vista immediately instills a sense of tranquility. While the entire property exudes a sense of refuge, guests enrolling in the hotel’s Within Wellness program—set to fully launch early this year—enjoy an even more personalized check-in experience. Participants are guided through a serene garden designed to take them through the four elements of earth, water, fire, and air to an exclusive lounge within the Bamford Wellness Spa for a private check-in. The Within Wellness program offers a variety of choices, including partner retreats, also known as Partner Journeys, as well as bespoke individual stays. We opted for the third option, choosing from an array of à la carte wellness offerings available during our visit. As guests of the Within Wellness program, our room is specially equipped with wellbeing-centric features. There are eight

Upon entering their room, a Wellness Sage (their official title) gently smudges a hint of sage, inviting the guest to set a personal intention for their stay. The executive director of spa and wellness shares that this ritual not only purifies the space but also makes it truly theirs, whether they stay for four days or an entire month. Prior to arrival, a Wellness Sage reaches out to conduct a wellness assessment and discuss goals for the stay. Whether it's nutrition, a dedicated fitness regimen, luxurious spa treatments, medical guidance, or mental well-being, each itinerary is bespoke. Guests have the choice of blending these services or immersing themselves in a completely unique holistic experience. The hotel has introduced Vitahealth Precision Wellbeing for those who prefer a more scientific approach to health. Medical experts and certified practitioners lead this comprehensive wellness program. Picture IV infusion therapies and personalized nutritional guidance based on thorough medical assessments. For me, self-care means spa treatments. Over the course of my stay, I savor a massage that incorporates the healing power of Hawaiian plant medicine, enjoy the warmth of an infrared sauna, and experience the most lavish twoand-a-half-hour facial. The treatment blends various techniques like gua sha and cryo t-shock, alternating warm and cold therapies, that leave my skin radiant like the glistening ocean. I recommend a visit for this treatment alone.

It's unusual for a high-end property of this quality, especially one focused on wellness, to accommodate families. Personally, I feel most relaxed when I'm traveling with my daughter. My sister is having her turn to enjoy the spa while my toddler and I build sandcastles. She opts for a touchless service and is experiencing a float chamber for the first time. She describes the hour-long session as feeling like mere minutes. Other touchless therapies slated to launch in the upcoming months include a four-person oxygen therapy chamber, a two-person ice bath, a meditation pod, and a two-person cryo chamber. Afterward, she joins us at the poolside restaurant, The Sandbox, for an ahi tuna poke bowl, fresh catch ceviche, and Kauai-grown greens’ salad prepared with some of the vegetables grown on the property's rooftop organic garden. Because no spa day is complete without indulging in a nourishing meal. Those like us who take pleasure in food as a form of self-care will appreciate the property’s quarterly chef series, Chefs by Nature. Our stay coincides with the inaugural series featuring beloved LA chef Nancy Silverton. The program includes an interactive cooking lesson that incorporates locally sourced ingredients and a three-course charitable dinner, with the proceeds benefiting future chefs in the Kauai Community College's Culinary Arts Program. As the Hawaiian tradition suggests, with the sight of a double rainbow, our journey unfolds with blessings beyond our expectations. The pure delight I feel watching my two-year-old chase wild chickens and roosters on the sand embodies the essence of true well-being. W

e survived pandemic nights binge-watching the Australian mega hit Kath & Kim of twenty years ago. Now it was time to visit Oz again. But it’s FAR. BIG. Endless options, and wildly variable. Not that you can go wrong; wherever you go, you’ll encounter Australians. Fun-loving, upbeat, laugh-loving, kind-to-their-mates Australians. But a journey requires figuring out, because sadly, you have to go home. There’s just so much time. I wanted to go where Australians dream of going. I decided to complicate my life and stop in American Samoa; it seemed a reasonable way to manage the mighty Pacific. Halfway, right? It appeared reasonable. Not. As logistics emerged from the fog of uncertainty, I didn't want to give up. How hard could it be? Half an hour flight

between the two Samoas, crossing the international date line. A 12-hour ferry in rough seas if it didn’t work out. Game on, I said to myself. I disappeared down the rabbit hole of internet searches. Just ten or twelve flights would take me everywhere I wanted to go. Help coordinating things, now that would be useful. If that flight from Western Samoa got cancelled there could be issues. I'd like having someone waiting with my name on a sign. Luckily for me, I stumbled on The Tailor, wherever I found them. I really had no means of evaluating the vibe of a high-end cattle station or a luxury spa retreat in the Barrier Reef. An Australian bespoke travel agency specializing in luxury Australian experiences, The Tailor


knows their turf. They just needed to get to know me. And that’s what’s special about them. They work on learning about you and your travel hopes. They got a big kick out of my love of Kath & Kim. Instinctively I knew I was in the right hands. Very right. They knew how to go from point A to B without struggling. How to avoid an overnight in a connection town. They knew all the players, from private helicopters and bush planes to dazzlingly swank camps you’ve never heard of: they publish a coffee table book called Australia in Style, a compendium of remarkable experiences. Letting go of booking it myself was my very best decision. Talking it through with an expert clarified for me what my perfect trip would consist of. I was shocked that so many small luxury properties were sold out a year in advance. Decisions required! Over months, my agent Kylie and I spoke, emailed, texted. We crafted an exquisite and glamorous itinerary. My choices: a high-end cattle station on the Top End, including a visit to see Aboriginal cave art in Kakadu National Park; a fancy stay in the Daintree Rainforest, oldest in the world; and an intimate island resort accessible by helicopter in the Great Barrier Reef. They urged me to finish in Sydney, which I thought I'd done before. But I stopped managing myself and accepted guidance; my Local Eyes private touring by car and by boat really defined the spirit of Australia. It was nearly the don’t-miss of the trip. Their love of their native land was coupled with a perfectly curated overview, plus hat shopping if needed. I needed. About Samoa, they said at The Tailor, you’re on your own. Wan and outdated internet info failed to deter me. Ancient Tripadvisor commentary favored Tisa’s Barefoot Bar on Two Dollar Beach; with nothing to lose I just called her. Chatting her up I liked her immediately and found myself committing to bringing a small bottle of castor oil with me. I didn't ask why. Verbal dates agreed to, no advance payment. She’d just come get me at The Tradewinds. (And there’s a bar for local color if ever there was one.) Her place was everything I don’t do. One fale on the beach with mosquito netting, no private bathroom, no lock. No hot water. But totally authentic. And so is American Samoa, for that matter. Stunning. South Pacific in the dreamy ways you hope for plus an ugly stinky cannery in ways that help the economy. Very few tourists. Blissful. Tisa’s partner Candyman does the cooking. Once a week they do the whole native feast. People come for lunch or dinner, the bar is popular, and your room is alongside that action. Doesn’t matter. The same turtle swims into the shoreline daily to eat fallen flowers. Surf crashes beyond the reef

in a changing light panorama, leaving you transfixed and totally without desire to go anywhere. But she took me around. I saw the nice homes of retired military people. Ordinary homes with longhouses for village meetings to decide matters, raised funerary monuments for family buried in the yard. We went to the blowhole and the national park. We got particularly frank with one another. Tisa reminds me of Tina Turner with tattoos. She founded the annual tattoo festival as part of preserving Polynesian heritage. She’s passionate about keeping her reef pristine. Teaching the kids about their cultural inheritance. I came as a guest and left as her Stateside Sister. Then Qantas Airlines worked its mischief. A little change to your itinerary, they texted. Not leaving 5 p.m. Try 5 a.m. Not nonstop to Sydney. Going via Brisbane, or Brizzie as the Aussies say. Eventually, I did make it to Darwin. And coincidentally sitting next to two of four wild women on their way to a long-postponed girls’ trip to Bamarru Plains. Just where I was headed. Hard drinking partying ladies, my new best friends, the Bamarru Babes. A lengthy book might do justice to the great Northern Territory, but here we must manage with a few superlatives about the night skies, the duck symphony, and birdsong at dawn; the blistering heat of the afternoon that sends you to the pool or to retreat in your tent and just listen, as I loved doing. Nothing beats the shrieking of hundreds of cockatoos, white ones and black ones, a constant chorus of content and discontent. Their cacophony is punctuated by hopping wallabies, and buffalo trodding from trees to water and back again. Riding in the airboat with your earphones on and a sharp eye for crocodiles— nothing could be grander. Afternoon safari in vehicles and you also see herds of wild horses, called brumbies, descended from those left by the first settlers. There are exotic butterflies, interesting trees, monumental insects to examine. Sundowners at the shrinking wetland’s edge, at the end of the season, is majestic. And then it’s one large table at dinner, and of course, the Babes are drinking, skinny dipping and setting off the fire alarm, but ready at daybreak on the Kakadu excursion to see Aboriginal cave art. Visiting the Daintree Rainforest was a huge opportunity given my pleasure in plants, strange birds like the cassowary, and exotic ice cream flavors such as wattle seed and jackfruit. I loved the small town of Port Douglas, looking like a page from the past, and loved the short

drive from Cairns. But I see beautiful beaches and think of a swim, but people know better: crocodiles. There’s always danger in Australia, whether insect, snake, or reptile! Silky Oaks Lodge had amazing river cabins but I saw no one at the spa. The site was inviting but not terribly convivial for solo travelers. They offered free laundromat and it was nice that if you returned a moment too late from the river, you found some other traveler had folded your clothes just as you then would do for somebody else. I’d reached the point in the journey where I was only too happy to enjoy room service and luxuriate in my river perch. I was ready to make new friends at Orpheus Island, so truly intimate and beautiful. The beach houses made you feel you were in a 40s movie. Everybody got to know each other quickly and I soon discovered I was not the only one who feared the current. My new 80-year-old Australian buddies confided at lunch, that's the end of our snorkeling days. I failed to get in the water. I loved sailing and boating but somehow didn’t want to get in. There I was in the Great Barrier Reef, feeling like a stuffed sausage in a wetsuit. I feared the water, strangely. I spied half a dozen manta rays at the shore, and some sharks, and creatures I didn't want coming near me. I’m not particularly proud of this, but it’s worth mentioning because the sense of being tiny in an immense ocean is ever staggering and petrifying, frankly. The immensity bears in on you the way it does in the Grand Canyon. I decided to simply listen to myself: I’m habituated to calm coves where you merely swim a few yards to where you can stand up. I was thrilled to see my female helicopter pilot in her red bird to take me away. We got a good glimpse of whales from above. Three final nights at The Langham in Sydney deserve every accolade you can heap on a hotel. They set the standard in comfort and thoughtfulness for people and dogs, plus it’s in an old residential neighborhood perfect for little strolls and cute shops and restaurants. Though it's hard to beat the hotel's food. Easy, right? I was worn out, ready for the push home. I love watching the flight tracker, knowing I’m gaining on that eight thousand miles. We passed the same unknown islands as on the outbound; Baker Island. Mataufu Island. Atafu Village. They beg for discovery. If you figure a way to get there, send a report on such secret hideaways.*

T

he airplane’s shadow ripples swiftly over bluecapped domes and volcanic rock as I touch down on the world’s most famous island. If an ancient oracle had told me I would return here after just five short years, I’d have instantly called her bluff. But alas, some prophecies are self-fulfilling. So the Aegean and I lock eyes once again. I’d always known that I would return to this island; the birthplace of mythology, an archaeological wonder, the screensaver of many a digital nomad; without knowing when or why. But when the opportunity presented itself for a once-in-a-lifetime European summer to visit friends living in Spain, I had one thought. Well, if I’m traveling all that way, I sure as hell better make it back to Greece.

My first encounter with the Cyclades occurred as a brighteyed 18-year-old fresh out the halls of high school, and lasted all of a few days. That was all I needed to fall in love. Back then, my airport pickup was much less glamorous; shared with two strangers, a couple, who were noticeably uneasy with the driver’s laissez-faire lack of a seatbelt. “Relax, relax,” he had said in a thick accent, rolling his eyes at the Americans’ penchant for punctuality (and basic car safety). “No stress...” I was starting to like the Greeks already. On this much-awaited return, our upgraded Tesla escort ascends higher and higher above velvety cobalt waters, carving slowly through Assyrtiko vineyards on our journey up Santorini’s black-rock caldera. An island as

dramatic as a Greek tragedy—it’s only fitting. Absorbing the Herculean vistas in person, it’s easier to believe the myths are true; that the jagged islands were formed by angry gods who threw clumps of earth into a thrashing sea, protecting their lovers from a Titanian wrath. We pull into the desert-toned cul-de-sac of Andronis Concept Wellness Resort, nestled high in the village of Imerovigli above a cascading sea of blue domes. Ironically, this resort is one of the only non-white buildings in Santorini, its earthy hues exuding a monochromatic environment of stillness and sophistication away from throngs of tourists summering in town. Herb gardens abound, and sculptural lines meet exposed black concrete to form our so-called perch above the clouds. A Grecian treehouse, if you will. We’re handed a sangria and shown to our room, one of 28 suites whose sliding glass doors open up to a private infinity pool and a sheer drop off to a view older than antiquity itself. A knock on our door soon follows, and an attendant emerges with a bottle of local wine (Santorini’s main export) and a platter of mignardises. Pouring a glass and taking a rightful plunge in our pool, my friend and I make eye contact with breathless hikers trekking the 6.5-mile footpath from Fira to Oía, an odyssey in and of itself. Ah, how they wish they were us. From our vantage point on the plush daybed, I’m struck with the realization that I can see both Santorini’s very beginning and end, two tips of land that once merged

before their violent divorce via volcanic eruption at least 5,000 years ago. I imagine that if I were an ancient Minoan settler gazing out across the leveled sea, I, too, would believe the earth was flat...that if I sailed just a bit too far I’d fall right off the inevitable edge. Thank goodness for Aristotle! It’s not long before we set foot on that very volcano; our vessel, a pirate ship. Sailing the irreplicable azure of the Aegean, I feel an unnerving connection to history; these waters carried the ancestors of Western philosophy. From the boat, Oía’s white buildings look like a light snowfall against a dark mountain. Attempting to hike in the beastly heat, the volcano’s unforgiving black rock is impertinent enough to shatter my friend’s iPhone, but kind enough to spare her camera lens for the rest of the trip. Santorini’s drama strikes again, I think. We don pool noodles and jump into volcanic hot springs, both the water’s buoyancy and the sheer ecstasy of swimming in the Mediterranean keeping us afloat. For those too advanced for pirate ships and pool noodles, Andronis Concept readily supplies a luxury catamaran, or, for the airborne, a private helicopter ride to Mykonos, Crete, or Athens. Greece, where island hopping for dinner is just another manic Monday. Back at Andronis, I freshen up using the room’s matteblack cave shower. I wonder, would this seem out of place in my white-picket-fenced California home? The previous night had been spent gorging on lobster pasta and an obligatory Greek salad at the cult-favorite Ammoudi Fish Tavern, where fresh-caught octopus hang from clothesline and the waters are iridescent even after dark. Tonight, we’re embarking on a fine dining adventure at Throubi, the center of Andronis Concept’s holistic wellness philosophy featuring fresh, raw ingredients sourced from the gardens on-site—“throubi,” we later learn, is a Greek herb reminiscent of thyme. Executive Chef Charalampos Koukoudakis presents eight lavish courses in perfect synchronization, our very own ambrosia and nectar. Artful presentation accompanies a holistic experience for the bold epicure: leek mousse,

umami mushroom tea, shrimp in sundried tomato water, sea bass ceviche, wagyu with a foamy sweet potato and provolone purée. It’s a testament to the true Mediterranean diet of fish, fats, and vegetables that so many followers seek to replicate. The etesian winds blow, hot and dry, as I sip on a cocktail called All Day Euphoria. The sky turns to fire at 8:26 p.m., vessels rocking in the distance like toy boats on a liquid gold sea. A sunset as old as myth itself, dancing between blue domes. The cats watch, too; their nightly cinema. Come morning, Throubi transforms into a luscious breakfast buffet, overflowing with Greek yogurt, fruit, eggs, and croissant baskets as we dine in the morning mist. Through the maze of walkways we find Kallos Spa, rated one of the best wellness resort spas in the world, where we’re presented with a shot of vanilla lemongrass water and choice of three aromas. I choose to “be destressed” with a eucalyptus oil massage in the quiet serenity of the cave-like vicinity. Its sliding doors lead directly out to the main pool, where we meet Andrea Bohlheim, Group Director of Andronis Spa & Wellness. She walks us through Andronis Concept’s approach as a romantic, uncrowded, wellness-centric alternative to its bustling sister properties, like Oía’s sprawling Andronis Arcadia. Afterwards, I indulge in a caffe freddo. The mysterious mist is gone, the sun is blazing, and I dive into the matte black pool, a more abrupt wake-up call than the coffee. That night before bed, I sneak away to sit on the patio, watching the lights of ethereal Oía float like a frozen ship in the distance. Some dare to say that Santorini is overrated; they are mistaken. Here, everything is perfect. The very intrigue knit into its velvet waters, the sunset that rises and falls as if a goddess is taking millenia-long breaths. I take solace in the fact that next time I return, the goddess will perform her dance again for me. But, that’s not where the prophecy ends. We’re off to explore a new island, embracing an even slower, even simpler way of Greek living...

PAROS Our 9 a.m. ferry unloads a Noah’s Ark-style swarm of bodies the next morning on Paros, an imperfectly round mass of land somewhere in the middle of the Cyclades. Unlike ultra-luxe Santorini, Paros lacks the global fanfare, a charming respite from tourist lines and a glimpse into authentic seafaring village life. A stranger to this environment, new things stick out to me. Quaint fishing harbors, ancient ruins littering rocky planes, Byzantine paths that have weathered the winds of a thousand years. The intoxication of a slow life, spent between whitewashed alleyways and crystallized ocean dips. The stuff of epic poems and siren songs. We’ve chosen to dive even further off the map with our accommodation, down the southwest side of the island where few taxis roam. All the action is up in Naoussa, but if you’ve come to truly unwind, you’ll find Seesoo Paros a paradise. It’s the kind of happy place that makes you dream of ditching society and living out your days the traditional way, hanging clothes to dry and baking pita in the sun. I suppose, for some, it could get repetitive. But I suppose, for some, it could be perfect. I’ve yet to discover my fate. We’re in desperate need of a bite when we arrive at Seesoo, which sits proudly on a windswept kite-surfing shore and boasts 11 rooms of pure bliss. I could easily lie to my friends and say this is where Mamma Mia was filmed, with its stark white terraces, thatched straw awnings, blue shutters, and ladders propped up against stone walls. I sit for breakfast with Seesoo’s owner Claudia Bontus, her deep tan glowing against a neon pink tank top. Each May,

she, her husband Christian, and their labradoodle Ellie move from home in Austria to Paros and stay through November. After falling in love with the island as teens, they returned years later with a vision to transform an undeveloped plot of land into this eco-chic barefoot bohemian hideaway, with the company of longtime friend and local, Mania, as their concierge. There’s something to be said for a hotel that started as a haven for its owners; a prophecy fulfilled. Claudia thanks me and returns to her seat at a large familystyle table, where she and Christian welcome guests and employees alike to dine and converse. Seesoo, unofficially, means family. I gaze across the scene: a picturesque private dock protrudes into a translucent ocean, where a fishing boat tethered by rope tinkers back and forth in the waves. To my left lies a coconut-shaped hut where massages are to be had; to my right, a straw-clad Tiki Bar and outdoor shower. Posh furniture litters the poolside and fruit baskets overflow as if they’re replenished hourly. I nurse a cappuccino the size of a bowl, scoping out where my ideal tanning spot will be. The goddess soon stirs, and the sun sets on night one. We ask Mania where we should have dinner. “Go to Antiparos,” she says, referring not to a restaurant but to an entirely different island. “Will we make the ferry?” we ask, concerned. “Yes, run!” she says, and we do, catching the last ferry just in time. Only five minutes have passed until we land on Antiparos’s shores. We stroll by a local fisherman in the midst of hanging several octopi out to dry. He holds one up in each hand as I pause to take

a photo, proud to show off his catch of the day. On our walk back from dinner, we encounter a litter of stray kittens on the side of the road, motioning for traffic to stop as we usher them to safety. One local seems rather irritated that we’ve interrupted his drive for a motley crew of felines as he picks one up by the scruff and places it back in the dirt, driving off without another word. Our minutes on the island are numbered, so we take advantage of our final day with a rental car and a well-stocked beach bag. Lesson learned: ATVs travel where cars cannot. Traversing to Monastiri Beach proves a rocky feat, just past the famed Kolymbithres, where massive smooth boulders jut like sleeping cyclops out of the water. At the highly anticipated beach club, we encounter sun umbrellas and cocktail menus. It dawns on me that it’s the Fourth of July, though thoughts of home couldn’t be further from mind. Besides—I think we’ve just found a new one. It’s our last meal on Paros, yet another Greek tragedy. I slip a linen skirt over my swimsuit as we head to Naoussa’s waterfront, with a months-old reservation at seafood mecca Barbarossa—which, we quickly realize, is arbitrary, as we’ve arrived at American dinner time and the tables are empty. The air is salty and gargantuan sea creatures rest on ice baths, awaiting their demise over the open flame. After dark, the tables indeed become thick with hoards of napkin-swinging diners gathering over platters of spicy vongole and crayfish risotto. I’m thankful our waiter talked us out of another Greek salad. Without nearly enough time to lose ourselves amongst winding, whitewashed alleyways and witness ancient sunsets cradle the horizon, we are on a plane from the world’s tiniest airport early the next morning, soaring over the Aegean. It stays with you, that striking blue, and those mysteries contained in the ruins that scatter the island’s undeveloped landscape. You feel connected to a humanity of eons ago. I’m always in Greece, I think to myself, maybe not in real life, but in spirit. I close my eyes and take a deep breath; the prophecy has been fulfilled, expectations have been met, and all is right in the world.*
